Tafter intense therapies in Colombia and rumors about his return to the road, Egan Bernal has achieved physical stability that allows him to train more rigorously on the bicycle accompanied by his trainers and already in Europe (more than two weeks ago) a possible return to competition is envisioned by Ineos.
A few weeks ago the doctor GUstavo Uriza, who attended him in Colombia, warned that Bernal could return to smaller official competitions from the end of May. However, at Ineos they prefer to take it easy despite Egan’s own desire to return to big competition.
Under that context, Rod Ellingworth, technical director of Ineosdialogue with ‘Velonews’ about the Egan case and what they foresee from the team. Ensures that they do not risk giving a date for his return to competitionsbut they do contemplate his return at the end of the year (perhaps in the Italian classics).
“Egan Bernal is pretty determined to come back and race before the year is out, but we don’t have a date. absolutely. Nothing at all and it would be unrealistic to think like that,” Ellingworth said.
The added: “There is no set date. Our last conversation was about taking it day by day.. He is doing very well, he is doing better than expected and he is happy to be back in Europe. He’s training with the cyclists on certain days and he can ride the bike with them, but he’s still in rehab and there’s no date.”
The only certain thing is that Bernal will not be in the Tour de France and maybe a small race after the gala round is an option for him. It is very unlikely that he will be in the Vuelta a Espaa, but he himself wants to compete even though he is aware that there will be races that he will not be able to finish while he picks up the usual pace.
This May 24 will be 4 months since his accident and the illusion grows in him and those around him.
