The world can be a complicated place if you are a vegetarian or vegan. From steaks to seafood, animal-based diets are the norm for the vast majority of societies around the world. Of course, many countries are getting better at catering to vegetarians and vegans, but in many other places the options are still quite limited.

Nevertheless, thanks to the environmental and health benefits of diets (not to mention, you know, the significant reduction in cruelty to animals), both veganism and vegetarianism are on the rise. Then, what are the best destinations to visit if you follow a plant-based diet? Well, a study of the travel blog asher and lyrical hello revealed.

Through a large amount of data analysis, ALABAMA made a “Vegan Travel Index” which classifies 37 of the best and worst countries for vegetarians and vegans. The job looked at the percentage of the population that is vegetarian, before combining that data with the number of vegetarian/vegan restaurants per million annual tourists. This information was then compared with the country’s per capita supply of fruits, vegetables, legumes, meat and fish.

And on top of the podium is… India! Which, we suppose, is not too surprising. India not only does it have many vegetarians, but the country has a large supply of fruits and vegetables, and comparatively very little meat and seafood. The vast country of South Asia is followed by Mexicowhich is driven by its supply of fruits and vegetables, and Brazilwhat’s wrong with it a large number of vegetarians and an impressive list of vegetarian and vegan restaurants.

The United Kingdom stands in a respectable position 13, while state Joined occupies the position 22 Y Australia the 29. The bottom of the table is latviawhat is this weighed down by the fact that the Baltic state apparently has very few vegetarian or vegan/vegetarian restaurants.
