Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, after the consequences of his aggression against comedian Chris Rock. While the actions of the organization that organizes the Oscars were speculated, Smith has decided to make the most forceful decision.
“I have responded directly to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice and will accept any and all consequences of my conduct. My actions at the ninety-fourth Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful and inexcusable,” the actor said. a statement in which he disassociates himself from the Academy.
Smith went on to mention that the list of people he has hurt is long, and that it “includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, everyone in attendance, and the global audience at home.”
“I am heartbroken and want to refocus on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to return to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. Therefore, I resign my membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any other consequences the board deems appropriate“, stressed the actor.

Academy president David Rubin responded that the ‘King Richard: A Winning Family’ actor’s resignation was accepted. “We have received and accepted the immediate resignation of Will Smith from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. We will continue to move forward with our disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s standards of Conduct.”
It is worth mentioning that the Academy, in a statement, assured last Wednesday that Smith refused to withdraw from the Oscar ceremony after slapping Chris Rock, who joked at the gala about the flush cut of Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia (hair loss).
By resigning from the Academy, Will Smith will not be able to vote in future editions of the Oscar awards. However, he could be nominated again for other productions in which he acts.
“Change takes time and I promise to do all the work to make sure that I will never again allow violence to overcome reason,” the actor’s message ends.
